This oral care product takes its name from Joseph Lister, the influential figure who introduced antiseptic surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Scotland.
The creation of Listerine dates back to 1879 when Joseph Lawrence, a chemist from St. Louis, Missouri, developed it. Initially, the Lambert Pharmacal Company, later known as Warner-Lambert, marketed Listerine.
However, Johnson & Johnson took over manufacturing and distribution responsibilities following their acquisition of Pfizer’s consumer healthcare division on December 20, 2006.

Over time, Block Drug shifted its focus to manufacturing dental care products, and by 1925, it had become the company’s primary area of expertise.
Leonard N. Block, following in his father’s footsteps, played an integral role in the family business.
In 1938, the company relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey, further advancing its operations.
In the year 2000, Block Drug was acquired by Smith Kline Beecham P.L.C., subsequently merging into GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).
However, a significant development occurred on July 18, 2022, when Haleon was established as a separate entity through a corporate spin-off from GSK.
With this transition, Haleon assumed ownership of the Sensodyne brand, continuing its dedication to providing effective oral care solutions for individuals with tooth sensitivity.
