President Droupadi Murmu recently bestowed the prestigious Bharat Ratna award upon veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart Lal Krishna Advani. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar graced the occasion at Advani’s residence. PM Modi lauded Advani’s significant contributions to modern India, expressing his pride in collaborating with him.

Nominated by the PM Modi-led Union Government, Lal Krishna Advani was among five distinguished individuals recommended for India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna. President Droupadi Murmu posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna on former Prime Ministers Chaudhary Charan Singh and PV Narasimha Rao, former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, and agriculturist MS Swaminathan.

Lal Krishna Advani, born on November 8, 1927, is a prominent Indian politician who held the position of the 7th Deputy Prime Minister of India from 2002 to 2004.

He played a pivotal role in the founding of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing Hindu nationalist volunteer organization. Notably, Advani served as the Minister of Home Affairs from 1998 to 2004, making him the longest-serving individual in that role.

Additionally, he has the distinction of being the longest-serving Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Advani was the BJP’s candidate for the position of Prime Minister during the 2009 general election.

Lal Krishna Advani and the BJP’s Ascendancy
In collaboration with his ally Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani co-founded the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980 and contested his debut Lok Sabha election in 1989 from New Delhi. Notably, Advani spearheaded the Ram Temple movement in Ayodhya and initiated a Rath Yatra in the 1990s advocating for the temple’s construction at Ram Janmabhoomi.

The Ram Rath Yatra

The Ram Rath Yatra was a significant political and religious event that took place from September to October 1990. Organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its Hindu nationalist allies, the yatra was spearheaded by L. K. Advani, who was the president of the BJP at the time. The primary objective of the yatra was to show support for the movement led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and other groups within the Sangh Parivar to construct a temple dedicated to the Hindu deity Rama at the site of the Babri Masjid.

Serving as the Deputy Prime Minister under Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani played a pivotal role in establishing a robust grassroots network for the BJP, paving the way for its historic ascent in 2014.
